On Being a Woman: 5-Month Group

“I signed up for this circle because I wanted to carve time out for myself and connect with other women who wanted to do the same for themselves. I wanted to have a chance to listen to my own voice as inspiration on how to fully live my own life. The circle gave me all of that and more.”

This popular five-month circle is a group coaching experience designed to provide women a chance to pause in the midst of their busy lives. It is ideal for the woman who is feeling like she is moving really fast – too fast – and is craving some time out of the fray to catch her breath, reflect, plug back into herself and create some intention for how she wants to live her life moving forward.

Just showing up to this monthly circle can represent a radical act for most women. And yet women find there is a deep knowing that draws them to this circle – a sense that it will nourish them, offer some much needed perspective, and create some alignment between who they are and how they are living their lives.

“On Being a Woman immediately spoke to me and I signed up. The first night of the circle, I walked in asking myself, ‘What have I done?’ Lael’s easy going way put me at ease, and over five months, the circle served as a launching pad for some deep changes that had been brewing within, but that I could not give form to. I ended the circle with a level of clarity that has been missing for years.”

This circle is held locally in Portland and is offered each fall and concludes the following spring. The circle offers five to ten women a group coaching experience that explores where they are and what they want in the context of being a woman today in the world. It affords women the chance to take inventory, sort through, and make conscious choices about their lives and how they want to be in them. Guided and facilitated by Lael, this circle is structured around monthly themes and is enhanced by a reader, coaching tools and exercises.

Details, monthly themes and exact dates are listed below. Women who register for this circle are asked to commit to the entire five-month experience (signing up for a singular month is not an option.)

This circle will fill up quickly, so if you’re interested, please reach out to Lael with your questions and interest to see if this circle is a good fit for you.

Imagining Our Red Tent: Creating Intentional Space

This first group will be a chance for us to acknowledge what a radical act it can be to simply pause in our busy lives. Knowing that most women are drawn to this circle because “I just know I needed to be here”, we will take our sweet time reflecting on and sharing the intentions that drew us to this experience. In this way, we will co-create our very own “red tent”, that archetypal place that houses the collective of women’s wisdom. In clarifying our own thoughts and hearing the experiences of others, we will begin to appreciate how we are not as alone as we might have imagined.   From this place of wisdom and knowing, we will give voice to our specific intentions for this five-month journey – individually and collectively – and what we hope to create as a result.

Unpacking the Feminine: Seeing Ourselves as Women

For many of us, we’ve never really taken the time to consider what it means to be a woman – how we’re different, what makes us special, and how we move through the world. Using the archetypal feminine as a backdrop, we will explore the ways of women’s knowing that live deep in our bones, and will acknowledge and savor the many gifts we bring to this world as women.  In reconnecting to that ancient wisdom, we’ll create some new awareness and appreciation for how we are different. We will articulate and seek to honor more fully the way we do things, the way we see things and the way we are as women. In doing so, we will begin to see ourselves more fully as the women we are.

Cycles & Seasons: The Context for Living Our Lives

As women, we can symbolize our essence by the circle. In this manner, we are one with the seasons of the year and the cycles of the moon. This month’s conversation will remind us of that essence, inviting us to look at how we honor and harness, or deny and discount the rhythm that moves within us. We will explore the ways in which we (and the society and culture we live in) can more fully listen to and live from both the feminine (yin) and masculine (yang) energies within us, enabling us to live with more ease and less effort.

Balance-Schmalantz: Keeping It Real

In this fourth group, we will explore our personal and the cultural underpinnings of the ever-elusive notion of balance. We will clarify what we are seeking in this quest, and what we think we will get as a result. The overarching thread for this conversation is the embedded belief that like standing on one foot, we must constantly make adjustments and recalibrate our balance accordingly. For those of us feeling as if we are forever hunting “balance” down, we’ll toy with abandoning the chase altogether and discuss how else we might use that freed-up energy.

Nourishment: The Care and Feeding of You

In this increasingly chaotic and fast-paced world, we will recognize the need to come home to ourselves to be still, centered and grounded. As we seek to close out this five month circle experience, we will explore ways in which we plug back into the wisdom currents that run through the earth, through us as women and through our bodies. Recognizing the critical role we play as women – literally or figuratively – in conception, incubation and birth we’ll seek to more fully understand how taking care of our selves is actually taking care of others and taking care of the world.
